Meet Brave Kids
Sloane
Sloane is now an active third grader that still loves to do cartwheels. She actually participates in competitive gymnastics. In addition to this she loves to ride horses, spend time with her family, and go to the beach when she can. Sloane currently likes to read and is excited to share her story, Cartwheels, to inspire other struggling readers to not give up and to find their own special kind of smart.
“Hi! I am Sloane and this book is about me and my struggle to read. Dyslexia makes reading tricky, and it used to make me feel like I wasn’t very smart. I thought I would never read like my family and friends. I did a lot of cartwheels trying to avoid those feelings until my first-grade teacher, Mrs. Peterson, taught me that we all have our own special kind of smart. With the help of my teachers and tutor, and a lot of hard work, I am learning to crack the reading code. I now see how smart I really am! I still love doing cartwheels but I also like reading. Who ever thought that I would be awesome at both?”
MATTHEW
Matthew is a second grader who loves to do lots of second grade things. He loves basketball and bike riding and wrestling with his brothers. He is rocking kindergarten until he realizes his hair is falling out. Listen to Matthew read his story about alopecia as he told it to Tracy Peterson in the story, Ball Caps, Beanies, and Being Bald or Alopecia Stinks. Matthew hopes that telling his story will help other kids who are also experiencing alopecia.
